Trailer: Last Cab to Darwin. A cab driver from Broken Hill embarks on an epic road trip to Darwin after being told he doesn't have long to live. There's a lot to like in Last Cab to Darwin, not least the chance to watch Michael Caton stretching himself in a role that requires restraint of his comic gifts in favour of his dramatic ones. He does it beautifully, in a performance to remember, with enough of one to deepen the other. And yet, it's harder to love the movie.

Its ambition is wide – no less than an examination of the way white and black Australia have never come to terms with their secret history of sexuality and love – but ambition is not achievement. The play by Reg Cribb had a season in Sydney 1. Barry Otto as Rex the Broken Hill cab driver who decides to drive to Darwin to die, because euthanasia is (briefly) legal there. The play was based on the true story of cab driver Rex Bell. Jeremy Sims produced that play on stage, and I can imagine it working well with Otto.

It ran for three hours, time enough to encompass all the things Cribb wanted to talk about. Movies have less freedom, because they need immediacy. What you see has to feel like it is taking place now, for the first time. The structures that make for good theatrical writing often get in the way.

It's hard to squeeze the stage craftiness out of a screenplay, although Sims and Cribb do their best. The movie runs a leaner 1.

And the more they load it, the less immediate it becomes. Michael Caton delivers the drama in Last Cab to Darwin. Photo: Wendy Mc. Dougall. Rex (Caton) has had an operation on his cancer before the movie starts. His doctors tell him it hasn't worked; he might have three months.

On the radio, he hears a Darwin doctor, Nicole Farmer (Jacki Weaver), talking about the need for right- to- die legislation. She has developed a machine that will assist patients to die. After one phone call, Rex decides that's the go. No waiting, no fuss.

Except that there are people who love him – and the one who loves him most, his black neighbour Polly (Ningali Lawford), is his little secret. Unacknowledged, she is therefore barely to be considered in his decisions. Rex is born and raised in Broken Hill. He drinks with a bunch of close mates (John Howard, David Field) till closing time, then staggers home to his weatherboard cottage. In the morning, Polly brings him tea and toast from her place, after shouting criticisms of his character for the sake of the nosy neighbours. Rex may hold her hand on the porch, but only when the neighbours aren't watching. Rex leaves quietly, after telling her of his decision.

On the road, he picks up a young black man who's running from everything. Tilly (Mark Coles Smith) is a smart- mouthed misfit who tries to rob him, but Rex saves him from a beating by his (black) creditors. They bond in adversity, as the road winds north. In the last part of the journey, an English nurse joins the odyssey, quitting the pub where she worked. Julie (Emma Hamilton) carries the film's compassion – between Rex's emotional illiteracy and Dr Farmer's medico- legal inhibitions. Caton holds the film together with his presence and timing, dry as dust in comedy, parched with pain, observing and growing in the last weeks of his life.

Rex has never really left Broken Hill; now he experiences a wider world, just as he's about to leave it. It's a plot worthy of drama and pathos, and both are there.

Sims directed the superb Beneath Hill 6. The Playroom Full Movie Part 1. Messines Ridge in World War I. His first film, Last Train to Freo, was adapted from another Cribb play. He has grown more ambitious with each film, and Last Cab to Darwin largely succeeds. It has heart and humour, a sense of history about black- white relations, and a keen eye for the mores of its characters, black or white. It bites off more than it can chew but you have to respect that it wants to.
