From Antananarivo ("Tana"), Madagascar’s capital, head to Diego Suarez, and explore Ankarana, a reserve with spectacular landscapes, including the eroded limestone towers known as “tsingy,” and many species of lemurs, including crowned lemurs, endemic to northern Madagascar. Day 1 (1 night), Day 5 (1 night), Day 9 (1 night), Antananarivo, Madagascar. Set near Ankarana National Park and blending in with its natural surroundings, Ankarana Lodge has comfortable bungalows with air- conditioning, comfortable beds, open- beam ceilings, and attached bathrooms. Though more basic in amenities and decorations, it more than makes up for with its location—the lodge is known to be frequented by brightly- colored chameleons, different types of lemurs, and other creatures! Days 3 to 4 (2 nights), Diego Suarez, Madagascar. This large modern hotel is set right in the heart of Diego Suarez on the main shopping street. Fort Dauphin / Berenty Reserve / Antananarivo. We fly to Fort Dauphin and drive to Berenty Reserve, home to the unique “spiny desert” habitat. This small private park that preserves a third of Madagascar’s remaining tamarind forest and is a superb place to see friendly ring- tails and superbly acrobatic sifakas, known for their death- defying tree leaps and the sideways hops they use to get around on the ground. We fly back to Antananarivo on Day 9.
Days 6 to 8 (3 nights), Berenty, Madagascar. The only accommodation near the Berenty Private Reserve, remote Berenty Lodge offers simple accommodation in 1. While relaxing in the lodge’s pleasant tea garden, we can watch habituated ring- tailed lemurs and dancing sifakas at play. The lodge’s restaurant serves traditional Malagasy- style food and French cuisine; electric generators are switched off after 1. Day 9 (1 night), Antananarivo, Madagascar. We head to Andasibe (Perinet), famed as the home of the Indri indri, a lemur whose haunting treetop song carries for miles as one troop calls to another. Their Malagasy name is babakoto, or “Father of Man.” These three- foot- tall primates are renowned treetop acrobats. Red- fronted lemurs, grey bamboo lemurs, and woolly lemurs are also found here, along with colorful reptiles including huge Parson’s chameleons. We return to Antananarivo on Day 1. Isalo Extension. Days 1. Perinet Reserve, Madagascar.
Conveniently located on a lakeshore just over half a mile from the park, the Vakona Forest Lodge features 2. The bungalows are all equipped with a bathroom and toilet, safe, mini- refrigerator, and mosquito nets. The lodge also has a private island that is a sanctuary for rescued pet lemurs (great photo ops!). The airy restaurant serves traditional Malagasy dishes as well as Western cuisine.
